The Chesapeake and Ohio and later the Chessie System hauled away millions of tons of coal mined here in Letcher County. The plant ceased operation in the 1980’s and was torn down. Also, railroad operations in Jenkins came to an end and the tracks were removed in the early 1990’s. |

This Chesapeake and Ohio overpass was constructed to facilitate the construction of the tunnel through Pine Mountain connecting Jenkins, KY to Pound, VA. The reconstruction of US 23 in the mid 1990’s brought the end of this bridge’s place on this roadway. Today, the road located between the overpass and the house seen serves as the entrance to the Little Shepherd Amphitheatre. |
